Thermax Ltd is gearing up to conduct a groundbreaking commercial-scale trial on high-ash coal gasification in East India, marking a pioneering effort in the region. The company has entered into collaborations with leading steel companies, aiming to establish strategic partnerships for the seamless execution of this project.
Through discussions with Coal India, Thermax is leveraging its patented technology for coal gasification, with the goal of driving innovation and sustainability in the energy landscape. Despite facing a viability gap of 30-40%, Thermax’s Managing Director and CEO, Ashish Bhandari, remains optimistic, citing the potential for government support. The proposed project of Thermax aims to operate at a capacity ranging from 100 to 150 tonnes per day, requiring an estimated investment of approximately Rs 600 crore. This initiative marks a substantial stride towards adopting cleaner energy alternatives.

The Ministry of Coal has pledged Rs 8,500 crore for viability gap funding, further positioning Thermax at the forefront of showcasing cleaner energy technologies through strategic initiatives like roadshows. This move is anticipated to lead to a shift in revenue mix towards cleaner energy, highlighting the company’s commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
