Thales has introduced the LGR275 Proxy, a next-generation 70mm laser-guided rocket developed specifically to counter the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems. The new solution is designed to provide armed forces with an effective and economical option for tackling the increasing use of drones across modern battlefields.

The rapid proliferation of small and medium-sized drones has transformed military operations worldwide. These systems are being used for surveillance, reconnaissance, target acquisition, and offensive missions, creating new challenges for defence forces. Conventional air defence assets are often expensive to deploy against relatively low-cost drones, creating an imbalance between interception costs and operational requirements.

The LGR275 Proxy has been developed to address this challenge by providing a dedicated counter-drone capability that combines precision, effectiveness, and affordability. Building on Thales’ established laser-guided rocket technology, the new system incorporates a proximity sensor and a specially designed warhead optimized for engaging aerial targets.

The rocket can be deployed in both air-to-air and surface-to-air missions, offering flexibility across a wide range of operational scenarios. Its design enables military operators to engage hostile drones efficiently while preserving higher-value air defence assets for more complex threats.

The introduction of the LGR275 Proxy reflects the growing demand for adaptable defence solutions capable of responding to rapidly changing battlefield conditions. Armed forces around the world are increasingly seeking systems that can counter large volumes of unmanned threats without placing excessive strain on defence budgets or reducing operational readiness.

To support rising customer demand, Thales Belgium is expanding its manufacturing capabilities significantly. The company plans to triple production capacity between 2026 and 2028, ensuring reliable supply for defence organizations seeking advanced counter-drone technologies. Investments in industrial infrastructure and production capabilities will enable faster delivery schedules while maintaining stringent quality standards.

The launch further strengthens Thales’ position as a key provider of advanced defence technologies supporting national security and force protection. The company continues to invest heavily in innovation across defence, aerospace, cybersecurity, and digital technologies to help customers address emerging operational challenges.

As drone technology continues to evolve, demand for specialized counter-UAS solutions is expected to accelerate. The LGR275 Proxy has been developed to meet these future requirements by delivering a highly responsive, scalable, and cost-effective capability that enhances air defence readiness and operational resilience.
