Teledyne FLIR OEM has announced the launch of the Boson® SX8, a next-generation thermal imaging module that combines an advanced 8-micron pixel architecture with SXGA resolution of 1280 × 1024. The new product is the first NDAA-compliant, ITAR-free, uncooled longwave infrared (LWIR) thermal camera module available in high-volume production to deliver this combination of performance and compact design.

Engineered for defense, industrial, and security applications where size, weight, and power consumption are critical considerations, the Boson SX8 introduces a significant advancement in thermal imaging technology. The module delivers four times the resolution of conventional VGA thermal cameras while maintaining a compact form factor suitable for integration into a wide range of systems.

The Boson SX8 family is designed to support demanding applications including uncrewed aerial systems, counter-drone platforms, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, perimeter security systems, handheld thermal devices, seekers, and visual augmentation solutions. By combining higher image resolution with an efficient design, the module provides enhanced situational awareness and longer detection ranges without the need for larger, power-intensive cooled thermal systems.

According to Paul Clayton, President of Teledyne FLIR OEM, the introduction of the 8-micron pixel architecture represents a major step forward in thermal sensing technology. He noted that reducing pixel size while maintaining image quality enables greater performance within a compact footprint, allowing system developers to deploy advanced thermal imaging capabilities at scale.

The company has also introduced the Boson SX8-CZ 15–75, featuring a factory-integrated 5x continuous zoom lens. The system combines the thermal camera with a precision-engineered 15–75 mm zoom optic, delivering seamless focus-through-zoom functionality, thermal compensation, factory alignment, and optimized image performance. The integrated design reduces development complexity and helps manufacturers accelerate product deployment.

Manufactured in the United States, the Boson SX8 family is designed for production-scale deployment and offers original equipment manufacturers a streamlined path from development to commercial manufacturing. The platform also supports integration with Teledyne FLIR OEM’s intelligent embedded software solutions, enabling advanced image processing and analytics capabilities.

The Boson SX8 will be showcased at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, where industry professionals will have the opportunity to experience the latest developments in high-definition thermal imaging technology. The launch reinforces Teledyne FLIR OEM’s position as a leading provider of advanced infrared sensing solutions for defense, industrial, automotive, and emerging technology applications worldwide.
