Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, highlighted the significant impact of local telecom manufacturing on job creation, particularly at the entry level, while also emphasizing its role in cultivating skilled manpower. The minister made these remarks during a meeting with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) within the telecom sector.
He pointed out that the government is committed to addressing challenges in a timely manner and establishing industry-friendly procedures. According to the Ministry of Communications, this initiative is crucial in engaging industry leaders in expanding and shaping the future trajectory of India’s telecommunications ecosystem.
The meeting was a part of the newly-formed Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) for telecom sector OEMs. During this discussion, the minister explored various strategies to stimulate indigenous manufacturing, implementing a practical and effective approach, enhancing ease of doing business, and revisiting issues from a previous meeting.
Minister Scindia has established six distinct SACs, each designed to provide the Department of Telecom (DoT) with valuable insights on various matters concerning the telecom industry. These committees are intended to foster a consistent and open dialogue between the government and industry stakeholders on issues related to the telecommunications sector.
At the meeting, Minister Scindia assured industry representatives of the government’s full support in resolving the issues they had raised, urging OEMs to present the best practices from other countries. According to the Ministry of Communications, the sales of telecom equipment manufacturing in the country have surpassed Rs 50,000 crore under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
This initiative has generated over 17,800 direct jobs, with many more indirect employment opportunities. The ministry further noted that the production of telecom equipment has crossed the milestone of Rs 50,000 crore, with exports contributing around Rs 10,500 crore.
