The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical body under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Naya Raipur. This collaboration aims to advance research, innovation, and standardization in next-generation telecom technologies and strengthen India’s leadership in global communications development.
Bringing together TEC’s expertise in telecom standardization and IIIT Naya Raipur’s strengths in academic research and technological innovation, the partnership establishes a joint framework to accelerate indigenous advancements in 5G, 6G, IoT, and related domains. The collaboration will focus on advancing Open RAN and network disaggregation, enabling the development of open interfaces, modular network architectures, and virtualized solutions that promote flexibility and innovation. By supporting multi-vendor interoperability, this initiative aims to reduce dependency on proprietary systems and foster a more competitive and resilient telecom ecosystem.
In the area of Cognitive Radio and Spectrum Sharing, joint research efforts will explore intelligent spectrum management and coexistence frameworks. These studies will align with the upcoming WRC-27 agenda to ensure efficient spectrum utilization, supporting the growing demand for wireless connectivity while maintaining equitable access to radio frequency resources.
A key focus will also be on emerging technologies such as 5G, 6G, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The partnership will drive the creation of experimental test environments and research frameworks to support the evolution of future communication networks. This work will play a crucial role in shaping India’s readiness for next-generation telecom advancements and their integration into real-world applications.
Additionally, both organizations will collaborate on standardization initiatives through active participation in ITU-T Study Groups and TEC’s National Working Groups, ensuring that India’s perspectives are reflected in global telecom standards. Complementing this, they will design India-specific test frameworks and interoperability protocols tailored to the nation’s diverse digital landscape, strengthening the foundation for secure, scalable, and locally relevant telecom solutions.
The partnership is expected to enhance India’s participation in international telecom standards and policy platforms. By establishing collaborative testbeds and real-world research programs, it will foster innovation in emerging communication technologies and enable the development of affordable, interoperable, and vendor-neutral solutions.
This joint effort supports India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting indigenous design and development in critical telecom technologies. The initiative will also contribute to reducing reliance on imported infrastructure, reinforcing national self-reliance in the communications sector.
The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) is the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. TEC formulates standards, specifications, and testing requirements for telecom equipment and networks in India, ensuring quality, interoperability, and alignment with global benchmarks.
The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Naya Raipur is an institute of national importance engaged in advanced research and innovation in information and communication technologies. The institute collaborates with government and industry partners to drive technology development, capacity building, and digital transformation initiatives across the country.
