Tata Steel to Retire India’s First Stamp Charge Coke Oven Battery at Jamshedpur Works

manufacturing news

Tata Steel announced on Sunday that it will decommission coke oven battery #7 at its Jamshedpur plant starting January 27. The company issued a notice to clarify any potential confusion regarding the flaring process that will take place during the shutdown.

This coke oven battery, India’s first stamp charge type, has been in service for 36 years and has produced over 12 million tonnes of coke, playing a pivotal role in transforming the steel industry, according to Tata Steel. The decommissioning will involve disconnecting the battery from the by-product plant’s foul gas suction system.

During the process, raw gas from the ovens will be safely flared through oven top flares and ascension pipes, in line with established safety protocols. The flaring will begin at 9 am and continue for about 24 hours. Tata Steel assured that the activity is part of a planned, controlled procedure and that the flaring poses no safety risk.
