Tata Steel is celebrating a decade of MOSAIC, its flagship Diversity and Inclusion programme launched in 2015, aimed at fostering a workplace culture where inclusion is not just a concept, but a lived experience. This year, the milestone aligns with Pride Month, highlighting the company’s continued efforts toward a more inclusive and diverse work environment.
MOSAIC is structured around five core focus areas: Recruitment, Sensitisation, Retention & Development, Infrastructure, and Celebration. It addresses the specific needs of various communities, including women, individuals with disabilities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and those supported through Affirmative Action.
“For over a hundred years, Tata Steel has prioritised people-first policies, evolving to stay both relevant and purposeful,” said Atrayee Sanyal, Chief People Officer at Tata Steel. “We are committed to creating an equitable workplace where every individual feels respected, supported, and able to contribute fully. As we mark ten years of MOSAIC, our resolve is even stronger to drive meaningful change across the organisation.”
Since its inception, MOSAIC has been the foundation for a series of progressive and impactful initiatives. These include the Women of Mettle scholarship (launched in 2017), the Women@Mines programme (2019), the Queerious case study competition for LGBTQIA+ students, and the recruitment of transgender operators for mining machinery in 2021. In 2023, Tata Steel introduced Ananta Quest, an initiative for students with disabilities, and welcomed its first group of female firefighter trainees. In 2024, the company made history by launching India’s first all-women mining shift at its Noamundi mine.
These initiatives not only promote diversity but also challenge long-standing norms in industries that have traditionally lacked representation. Tata Steel has set a group-wide target to achieve 20% workforce diversity by 2028.
The company’s commitment extends beyond launching new programmes. It has introduced policies such as equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners, gender-neutral parental leave, support for gender transition, and inclusive travel and relocation benefits—redefining workplace norms in male-dominated sectors.
Tata Steel’s ongoing efforts have gained global recognition. In 2023, it was named a Global DEI Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum—making it the only Indian company among eight selected worldwide. In 2024, it earned Gold Employer status from the India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI) for the fourth consecutive year, recognising its sustained work across gender, disability, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion. Tata Steel, along with its subsidiaries, associates, and joint ventures, employs over 78,000 people globally. The company has set ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving Net Zero by 2045, and is undergoing a multi-year digital transformation to become a leader in ‘Digital Steelmaking’.
Its Jamshedpur, Kalinganagar, and IJmuiden plants have received the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse recognition, and the company has been awarded the ‘Digital Enterprise of India – Steel’ Award 2024 by Economic Times CIO. Tata Steel has also been acknowledged for its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, earning the World Economic Forum’s Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Lighthouse 2023 recognition.
A consistent performer on the DJSI Emerging Markets Index since 2012, it has ranked among the top 10 steel companies in the DJSI Corporate Sustainability Assessment since 2016. Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur Plant is India’s first site to receive ResponsibleSteelTM Certification, followed by its Kalinganagar and Meramandali plants, with more than 90% of its steel production in India now coming from ResponsibleSteelTM certified sites.
Tata Steel’s numerous accolades include the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the best performing integrated steel plant for 2016-17, seven consecutive Steel Sustainability Champion recognitions from worldsteel, the 2023 Climate Change Leadership Award by CDP, and recognition as the most valuable mining and metals brand in India in 2024 by Brand Finance. The company has also been recognized with several awards, including the 2023 Global ERM Award of Distinction, ‘Masters of Risk’ at The India Risk Management Awards, and the ICSI Business Responsibility and Sustainability Award 2023.
