Tata Steel has taken a significant step forward in transforming India’s infrastructure industry with the launch of the country’s first Mobile Bore Pile Cage Machine and the inauguration of a fully automated Construction Service Centre in Guwahati, Assam. These groundbreaking developments highlight the company’s commitment to advancing innovation, improving efficiency, and promoting sustainability in India’s fast-growing construction sector, especially in the strategically vital North-East region.
The Mobile Bore Pile Cage Machine was unveiled at the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Plant in Assam. Created in partnership with TJK India, a global leader in reinforcement automation, this cutting-edge mobile solution marks a major milestone in on-site reinforcement production for large infrastructure projects. Designed to streamline operations, this ‘India-first’ technology aims to boost productivity, lower costs, reduce manual labor, and meet project specifications with exceptional precision. The machine is particularly valuable in regions with tough terrain and logistical challenges, offering tailored solutions that enhance project delivery.
In addition to the machine launch, Tata Steel inaugurated its first fully automated Construction Service Centre in Guwahati, developed in collaboration with SM Corporation Limited. This advanced facility is capable of producing 2,000 tonnes of reinforcement products per month and will initially focus on Tiscon ReadyBuild – pre-engineered Tata Tiscon TMT rebars with coupler threading. Over time, the centre will expand its services to include Welded Wire Mesh, positioning itself as a one-stop shop for customized construction solutions.
Ashish Anupam, Vice President – Long Products at Tata Steel, spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of these initiatives: “The launch of the Mobile Bore Pile Cage Machine in Assam represents a key step in strengthening the infrastructure of India’s North-East, a region with immense potential yet complex construction challenges. This project, supported by our Guwahati Construction Service Centre, reinforces our commitment to providing innovative and value-added solutions for the region’s construction needs.”
To commemorate the launch, Tata Steel hosted the ‘Converse to Construct’ meet for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) community in Guwahati, attended by over 100 industry professionals. The event featured a presentation by Sh. Satish Pandey, Principal Scientist & Project Leader at the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, who shared insights on new technologies in road construction.
In December 2024, Tata Steel had also launched a similar fully automated Construction Service Centre in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The Guwahati facility is part of Tata Steel’s expanding network of 31 digitally connected and fully automated service centres across India. Together, these centres have driven a 33% year-on-year growth in ready-to-use reinforcement solutions. Equipped with cutting-edge automated machinery, the centres offer a wide range of services, including cut-and-bend, engineered meshes, rebar threading, and bore pile cages—paving the way for more efficient and sustainable construction practices across the nation.
Tata Steel’s commitment to responsible steel production is reflected in its achievements, including the first ResponsibleSteel™ certification for its Jamshedpur plant, with over 90% of its steel production in India now coming from certified sites. The company has also received numerous accolades, such as the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the best-performing integrated steel plant in 2016-17 and the 2024 Steel Sustainability Champion award from worldsteel, underscoring its leadership in both sustainability and performance within the global steel sector.
