Tata Steel has successfully completed the Phase II expansion at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, increasing its overall production capacity in India to 26.1 million tonnes (MT). The 5 MT expansion project, undertaken at an investment of ₹27,000 crore, has raised Kalinganagar’s capacity from 3 MT to 8 MT, the company announced. The expanded Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK) plant was officially inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday.

TV Narendran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Steel, remarked, “This expansion is a testament to our confidence in Odisha’s potential and reinforces our long-term commitment to the region. Kalinganagar is not just a manufacturing hub; it symbolizes the success that can be achieved when industry, government, and local communities collaborate effectively.”

With this expansion, Tata Steel plans to produce advanced high-strength steels for key sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defense. Odisha has become Tata Steel’s largest investment destination, with the company having invested over ₹100,000 crore in the state over the past decade. In addition to Kalinganagar, Tata Steel’s other operations include Tata Steel Meramandali (formerly Bhushan Steel) with a capacity of 5.6 MT, Tata Steel Jamshedpur at 11 MT, and Tata Steel Gamharia and NINL at 1 MT each.

The ₹27,000-crore Phase II expansion of the Kalinganagar plant, which began in November 2018, includes a new 5,870 cubic meter blast furnace, the largest of its kind in India. The expansion also includes upgrades to raw material capacity, upstream and midstream facilities, infrastructure, and downstream facilities such as a cold rolling mill complex. Tata Steel, along with its subsidiaries, associates, and joint ventures, employs over 78,000 people globally. The company has set ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving Net Zero by 2045, and is undergoing a multi-year digital transformation to become a leader in ‘Digital Steelmaking’.
