Tata Steel Becomes India’s First to Release Ferrochrome Environmental Product Declaration

Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first in India’s ferrochrome sector to publish an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices and aligns with global environmental standards.

The EPD, a Type III eco-label, offers transparent and third-party-verified data on the environmental impact of ferrochrome based on a comprehensive lifecycle assessment (LCA). This assessment evaluates the product’s impact from raw material extraction through transportation and manufacturing, adhering to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards.

Ferrochrome, an essential component in stainless steel production, is widely used across industries. By releasing the EPD, Tata Steel empowers its customers to make sustainable choices while supporting green building projects, where such declarations are increasingly required for certifications.

Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge of FAMD, highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating, “Sustainability is central to Tata Steel’s operations. The EPD for ferrochrome reflects our commitment to environmental transparency and our leadership in sustainable practices. It helps customers make informed decisions and reinforces our role as a trusted partner in sustainability.”

The EPD is registered in the International EPD System and publicly available. Tata Steel plans to expand its range of eco-labelled products, including GreenPro and EPD certifications, across its portfolio to cater to the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions. With multiple products already certified under GreenPro, Tata Steel continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainability and its dedication to meeting the needs of eco-conscious customers.
