The ₹6,900 crore Khorlochhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan, with a capacity of 600 MW, is under construction and is slated for completion by September 2029, according to Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha. The project, located on the Kholongchhu River in eastern Bhutan, marks a significant step in Tata Power’s international expansion in renewable energy.
Tata Power, in partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC), is developing the project through Khorlochhu Hydro Power Ltd, a public-private venture in which Tata Power holds a 40% equity stake. This collaboration began in August and is part of a larger strategic agreement announced in November to create 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity in Bhutan. DGPC, a subsidiary of Druk Holding and Investments Ltd, is Bhutan’s primary electricity generation utility.
Additionally, it plans to begin pre-construction activities for the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Project in January 2025, with commissioning expected by mid-2031. While the company is open to exploring opportunities in Nepal, there are no current plans for projects there, Sinha noted.
