TP Solar Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), has commenced commercial production at its 2GW solar cell facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, marking a major milestone for India’s solar manufacturing sector.

The state-of-the-art plant, with a total capacity of 4.3GW, is now the largest solar cell and module production site in the country. This development follows the earlier start of module production at the facility this year.

Tata Power Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Ltd, is now set to contribute significantly to India’s clean energy ambitions by locally producing solar cells, thereby reducing the nation’s dependence on imports. The 2GW production capacity will allow Tata Power to meet the rising demand for high-quality, domestically-manufactured solar components, particularly for large-scale energy projects.

The facility, which began module production in October 2023 and has already produced 1,250MW of solar modules, is expected to ramp up solar cell production to its full 4.3GW capacity within the next few months. Equipped with advanced TOPCon and Mono Perc technologies, the plant is designed to produce highly efficient solar cells and modules.

TPREL has invested approximately ₹4,300 crore in establishing the Tirunelveli facility, which plays a crucial role in the company’s vision of fostering innovation and self-reliance in renewable energy. The modules from the plant are already part of the government’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), and Tata Power is optimistic that its solar cells will soon join the list as well.

Initially, the solar cells and modules produced at the Tamil Nadu plant will be used to support Tata Power’s existing projects, further strengthening its supply chain. Looking ahead, the company plans to explore opportunities for distributing its products more widely in the domestic market.
