Tata Power, a major player in India’s integrated power sector, has taken a significant step toward expanding renewable energy in Assam by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government at the Advantage Assam 2.0 event. This partnership aims to develop up to 5000 MW of renewable and clean energy projects across solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage sectors, backed by a substantial Rs. 30,000 crore investment over the next five years.

The agreement, signed by Dr Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Power, Assam, and Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, in the presence of Assam’s Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, outlines key support from the state government. Assam will provide approximately 20,000 acres of government-owned, encumbrance-free land for these projects, facilitate private land acquisitions, and assist in infrastructure development to ensure efficient transmission connectivity. The state will also back the creation of Renewable Energy Parks and provide a single-window clearance system for approvals and incentives.

Further, the collaboration includes the identification of land for Group Captive sites, which will offer industries and tea gardens access to clean energy. This project will also introduce skill development programs to create a trained workforce for the renewable energy sector.

Assam has set ambitious goals for renewable energy, with solar power being a key focus. The state aims to achieve 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. This partnership aligns with Tata Power’s objective of accelerating the state’s clean energy transition while supporting its renewable energy targets.

In addition, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed another MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to further promote renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency. This agreement will scale up rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) and create around 3,000 direct job opportunities.

Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, emphasized, “These MoUs are vital steps toward enhancing renewable energy capacity in Assam, tapping into the state’s potential in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage. With robust policy support, infrastructure development, and skill-building initiatives, this collaboration will not only improve energy security but also fuel economic growth and job creation.”

Tata Power has already made significant contributions to Assam’s clean energy progress, with a 20 MW solar rooftop capacity, over 300 EV home chargers, and more than 20 public EV charging stations. These efforts are part of the company’s commitment to driving the state’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon energy future. This partnership reinforces Tata Power’s central role in advancing India’s renewable energy goals and its dedication to fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem aligned with the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
