Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to explore opportunities in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and its associated value chain. The agreement was formalized at India Energy Week 2025 in the presence of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), along with Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman & CEO of ONGC, Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, and other key dignitaries.

The partnership will focus on developing commercial ventures across various BESS applications, including utility-scale storage, grid stability solutions, renewable energy integration, microgrids, hybrid energy systems, industrial and commercial storage, backup power, EV charging infrastructure, and energy trading through ancillary services.

Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating: “This MoU with ONGC marks a significant step in accelerating India’s energy transition. Battery storage solutions will be instrumental in enhancing grid reliability, integrating renewable energy more effectively, and achieving India’s clean energy goals. Together, we aim to develop cutting-edge energy storage solutions that support a sustainable and resilient power infrastructure.”

Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman & CEO of ONGC, reiterated the company’s commitment to clean energy, saying: “As India moves towards a low-carbon future, ONGC remains dedicated to advancing green energy initiatives. This collaboration with Tata Power Renewables is a strategic move to strengthen the nation’s energy storage capabilities, which are essential for grid stability and large-scale renewable adoption. By combining our expertise, we will make meaningful contributions to India’s long-term energy security and sustainability.”

This partnership reflects TPREL and ONGC’s shared vision of strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem through innovative energy storage solutions. TPREL’s recent achievement in commissioning India’s largest Solar and BESS project—a 100 MW solar PV plant with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh—demonstrates its leadership in large-scale energy storage systems. This milestone enhances India’s clean energy infrastructure and sets new benchmarks for future BESS projects, reinforcing the country’s shift towards a sustainable, future-ready energy landscape.
