Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), in partnership with Kyoto-based Nissin Electric, is set to begin a demonstration project that will deliver electricity through India’s first micro substation using a power voltage transformer (PVT). This innovative system is designed to provide stable power to areas without access to a traditional power grid.

Nissin Electric, a company specializing in electric equipment, will collaborate on this initiative, which is part of Japan’s Energy Efficiency Technologies project. The project was publicly solicited by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), according to Tata Power-DDL, which supplies electricity to over 2 million customers in North Delhi.

The project aims to deliver reliable, cost-effective electricity to remote areas in India that lack fully developed grids but have power transmission lines nearby. Instead of constructing expensive, large-scale power networks, the micro substation equipped with PVT will convert high-voltage electricity from transmission lines into low-voltage power suitable for residential use.

This demonstration will feature a 100-kVA installation, directly stepping down three-phase 66-kilovolt electricity to a single-phase 240-volt supply for households. The entire installation will require only 40 square meters of space.

Gajanan S Kale, CEO of Tata Power-DDL, expressed confidence in the project’s ability to transform power distribution in rural and remote regions. “This project has the potential to reshape how electricity is supplied to areas with limited grid access,” he said. Kenji Kobayashi, Managing Director of Nissin Electric, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable development goals (SDGs) and emphasized the significance of the partnership.

The collaboration between Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric was formalized on August 21, following NEDO’s letter of intent with the Power Finance Corporation in January to undertake this demonstration project.
