Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has successfully commissioned a 126 MW floating solar power plant in Madhya Pradesh, one of the largest of its kind in India. The ₹596 crore project was awarded to TPREL by NHDC Limited and is situated in the Khandwa district at the Omkareshwar Floating Solar site.

The plant will supply clean energy to the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL) and represents a significant step in advancing the country’s renewable energy goals. The project was completed in just 26 months, showcasing TPREL’s execution capabilities.

The project features 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass solar modules, generating 204,580 MWh of clean energy annually and offsetting 173,893 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Designed with advanced engineering solutions, the installation ensures stability and efficiency through robust mooring systems, wave breakers, ballast anchors, and adaptive cableways.

It also boasts the world’s largest inverter floating platform, spanning 260 hectares of water, setting a global standard in floating solar technology. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the project conserves approximately 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually by reducing reservoir evaporation, demonstrating its dual environmental benefits.

Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director at TPREL, remarked, “This project showcases how renewable resources can achieve significant carbon reduction while maximizing the efficient use of land and water.” NHPC Managing Director Rajeev Jain added, “Our collaboration with TPREL highlights how floating solar technology can deliver clean energy while conserving vital water resources. This initiative paves the way for future renewable energy advancements in India.”

The Omkareshwar floating solar project is a pioneering model for future installations worldwide, illustrating how innovation can address environmental challenges and propel India toward renewable energy leadership.
