Tata Power, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), has launched an innovative demand flexibility program. This initiative encourages the shifting of water pumping demand to off-peak hours, utilizing renewable solar energy and taking advantage of Time-of-Day tariff benefits.

Tata Power, a pioneering integrated power company, has been a key player in the Indian energy sector for over a century. With a strong focus on sustainability and innovation, Tata Power has diversified its portfolio to include thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power generation. The company has also ventured into transmission and distribution, providing reliable electricity to millions across the country.

On the other hand, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is the governing body responsible for the administration of Mumbai, India’s largest city. MCGM is committed to enhancing the quality of life for Mumbai’s residents through various civic services, including waste management, public health, education, and infrastructure development.

With MP Ensystems Advisory Pvt Ltd as a research partner, the program aims to provide clean, renewable power for water delivery while reducing MCGM’s power consumption bills. Tata Power conducted a thorough analysis of demand patterns, identifying over 50 water pumping stations with high-demand flexibility characteristics.

The initiative commenced its operations at BMC-Bhandup. Throughout the experimental phase spanning 23 days in February 2024, the program effectively facilitated a substantial daily reduction of 345 kilowatts for a duration of 3 hours. This accomplishment resulted in the conservation of more than 23,000 units of electricity and a carbon offset totaling 21 tonnes.

By expanding the program to include most water pumping stations in Greater Mumbai, Tata Power expects a monthly demand shift of approximately 50 MW, resulting in 1.8 million units saved and an annual carbon offset of 1620 tonnes. This initiative highlights Tata Power’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and its contribution to reducing carbon emissions in the region.
