Tata Power Company Limited and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) have entered into a strategic collaboration to develop 5000 MW of clean energy generation capacity in Bhutan. This landmark partnership aligns with Bhutan’s vision to expand its energy generation to 25,000 MW by 2040, diversifying beyond traditional hydropower into solar and geothermal energy.

Supported by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, the collaboration represents the largest clean energy partnership between the two nations, leveraging their long-standing 15-year relationship. The MoU was signed in Thimphu, Bhutan, by Druk Green’s MD Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Tata Power’s CEO & MD Dr Praveer Sinha, in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and other dignitaries.

The joint initiative will focus on phased development of 4,500 MW hydropower projects, including the 1,125 MW Dorjilung, 740 MW Gongri Reservoir, 1,800 MW Jeri Pumped Storage, and 364 MW Chamkharchhu IV, along with 500 MW of solar projects under Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL).

Dr. Sinha highlighted the partnership’s significance in enhancing energy security and sustainability for both nations, emphasizing Tata Power’s leadership in clean energy with a portfolio of 12.9 GW, expected to grow to 70% renewable by 2030. DGPC’s MD, Dasho Rinzin, reaffirmed Bhutan’s confidence in Tata Power to accelerate the development of its vast renewable energy resources for economic growth and energy security. This collaboration is set to boost regional energy integration, creating green jobs, and supporting Bhutan’s growing economy, while complementing India’s renewable energy initiatives and seasonal power demands.
