Tata Motors to Launch Hydrogen-Powered Trucks in Pilot Project by March

Tata Motors will begin a pilot project using trucks powered by hydrogen internal combustion engines in the upcoming March quarter, as confirmed by a senior company official.In collaboration with IOCL, the company will run the hydrogen-powered trucks on three designated routes for 18 months as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission initiative. During the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors showcased a hydrogen-powered truck equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, stated that the company is preparing for both hydrogen internal combustion engine technology and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. He confirmed that the trucks with hydrogen internal combustion engines will start operating in the current quarter, covering routes from Mumbai to Pune, Jamshedpur to Kalinganagar, and Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

This pilot project will generate valuable data to enhance both the product and the infrastructure required for hydrogen refueling, Wagh explained. He added that Tata Motors has already been running 15 electric fuel cell buses in collaboration with IOCL for over 10 months, and significant progress is being made in the hydrogen fuel space across various stages.

Wagh also shared that the company is preparing for a commercial launch of hydrogen-powered vehicles within 12 to 24 months and hopes for further support in this transition. Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle division is focusing on providing enhanced value propositions, with an emphasis on sustainability, safety, and integrating digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence.

Wagh noted that the commercial vehicle sector has faced a fluctuating market this fiscal year but expressed optimism about positive trends across all end-use segments, expecting a strong performance in the fourth quarter. Regarding the upcoming Union Budget, Wagh praised the government’s continued support for electrification and the transition toward sustainability, citing incentives such as FAME and PLIs as key enablers of this shift.
