Tata Motors has announced plans to invest ₹914 crore in the first phase of its new vehicle manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet District, Tamil Nadu. The groundbreaking ceremony for the plant, located about 85 km from Chennai, took place on September 28.
The greenfield project will focus on producing premium cars and SUVs under the Tata Motors brand and its luxury arm, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). This investment is part of a larger ₹9,000 crore commitment by Tata Motors, agreed upon in partnership with the Tamil Nadu government, to be implemented in phases over the coming years.
In its initial phase, the company will develop a factory spanning 52,000 square meters within a 19,02,022.5-square-meter site. The facility is expected to be operational within 15 months and will employ approximately 1,500 workers. Once fully established, the plant will have the capacity to produce over 2.5 lakh vehicles annually, including electric and luxury models.
Tata Motors plans to gradually increase production over 5 to 7 years, with the facility serving as a key hub for next-generation vehicle manufacturing. The company is also prioritizing the development of a local supplier network in the region to enhance supply chain efficiency and support a localized production ecosystem.
At a recent EEPC India event in Chennai, Jaguar Land Rover officials invited local businesses to explore collaboration opportunities, highlighting JLR’s procurement practices, technological advancements, and sustainability goals.
JLR, which operates major facilities across the UK, US, India, China, and other regions, is known for its iconic brands, including Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar. The company also specializes in bespoke vehicles through its Special Vehicle Operations division and maintains its legacy through the Classic Vehicles program.
Currently, Tata Motors’ Pune plant assembles several JLR models, such as the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Discovery Sport. The new Tamil Nadu plant is set to further bolster Tata Motors’ position in the global automotive market.
