Tata Group has teamed up with two Taiwanese chipmakers, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation and UMC Group, to establish what is expected to be the inaugural major semiconductor manufacturing facility by an Indian conglomerate.
The Tata Group is a global enterprise headquartered in India, comprising over 100 companies operating in diverse industries such as automobiles, steel, IT services, telecommunications, and hospitality. Founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata, the group has grown to become one of India’s largest and most respected business conglomerates, with a presence in over 100 countries worldwide.
Known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and social responsibility, the Tata Group has played a significant role in India’s industrialization and economic development. The group’s businesses are guided by a core set of values known as the Tata Code of Conduct, which emphasizes integrity, excellence, and giving back to society.
Construction by Tata Group is set to commence soon, with a focus on initially developing mature nodes of 65 nm (nanometer), followed by 48 nm, and ultimately 28 nm. These nodes are crucial for connectivity in areas such as the internet of things, graphic processing units (GPU), and consumer electronics. The plant is projected to begin operations with a monthly capacity of 25,000 wafers, producing approximately 700–1,000 semiconductor chips daily.
UMC and PSMC, the second and seventh-largest foundries globally, respectively, recently inaugurated a US$5.3 billion chip manufacturing facility in Japan. Both companies, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, are projected to achieve significant revenues in 2023—UMC at US$222.53 billion and PSMC at US$3.429 billion.
Tata Sons’ Chairman, N Chandrasekaran, previously revealed intentions to build a semiconductor plant in Dholera. He indicated that the finalization of agreements to secure the fabrication unit is in its closing stages. The commencement of construction is scheduled for 2024.
