Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) has announced the acquisition of a controlling 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Ltd (PTI), a major contract manufacturer of iPhones in India. This marks Tata’s second significant move in the iPhone assembly sector within a year, following the acquisition of Wistron’s India operations in March 2024.

The deal highlights the strategic vision of Tata Sons’ Chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, who is committed to driving substantial investments in electronics manufacturing and positioning India as a global manufacturing hub. As part of the acquisition, TEPL and PTI will integrate their teams to ensure a smooth transition. PTI will be rebranded to reflect its new ownership, while continuing to offer high-quality manufacturing services. This acquisition strengthens TEPL’s presence in India’s electronics manufacturing industry, bolstering its iPhone production capabilities and solidifying Tata’s position in the global electronics supply chain, particularly within Apple’s ecosystem.

N. Chandrasekaran envisions the electronics sector as a critical driver of India’s economic growth, focusing on job creation and technological innovation. In line with this, Tata Electronics acquired Wistron’s India operations for $125 million in March 2024, marking a significant step in India’s electronics manufacturing ambitions.

Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, stated that the company’s expansion into this sector is part of a broader strategy to advance into AI, digital, and technology-led manufacturing.

Industry experts suggest that this move not only benefits Tata but also strengthens India’s “Make in India” initiative, attracting further investment and boosting the domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

Tata Electronics, established in 2020, is quickly emerging as a global leader in electronics manufacturing. The company specializes in Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS), semiconductor assembly, and design services, with over 50,000 employees across India.

The Tata Group also has plans to invest in semiconductor fabrication, testing facilities, and design houses, capturing a larger share of the growing electronics market. As Apple continues to diversify its production base outside of China, the company’s expanded efforts in India through collaborations with firms like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron are expected to support India’s role in global tech manufacturing.

Tata Electronics, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, is a forward-looking company focused on advancing India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Established to bolster the nation’s position in the global supply chain, the company specializes in precision manufacturing for high-tech industries, including semiconductors and electronics components.

With a commitment to innovation and sustainability, Tata Electronics emphasizes cutting-edge technologies, skilled workforce development, and environmentally conscious operations. The company’s initiatives align with India’s vision of becoming a global hub for electronics manufacturing, while fostering self-reliance and creating employment opportunities. Tata Electronics continues to set benchmarks in quality and technological advancement, contributing to the growth of India’s electronics and high-tech sectors.
