Apple Inc. is on track to open its fourth iPhone assembly plant in India, constructed by Tata Electronics and expected to commence production in November, according to a newspaper report. Located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, this facility will be Tata’s second iPhone assembly plant, following its acquisition of a former Wistron unit in Karnataka.

The new 250-acre plant, which also houses a components unit established by Tata three years ago, is projected to be a major contributor to Apple’s manufacturing expansion in India. Tata Electronics is investing ₹6,000 crore in the assembly plant, matching its previous investment in the components facility.

The factory is anticipated to create over 50,000 jobs, with 35,000 to 40,000 positions dedicated to assembly line work, making it the largest of its kind in India. This expansion aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between China and the US.

Apple’s iPhone contract manufacturers in India include Tata, Pegatron, and Foxconn. The company is crucial to Apple’s growth in the Indian market, which is projected to account for 20-25% of iPhone shipments this year, up from 12-14% the previous year.

Since initiating production in India just four years ago, Apple has rapidly expanded its operations. The new plant supports Apple’s goal of relocating 10% of its global iPhone manufacturing capacity to India by 2025-26, leveraging the government’s production-linked incentive scheme.
