Taneira Introduces GI-Tagged Sarees to Celebrate National Handloom Day

In celebration of National Handloom Day, Taneira, a brand by the Tata Group, has introduced Geographical Indication (GI) tagged handloom sarees, reaffirming its dedication to preserving India’s textile legacy. By offering sarees from iconic weaving hubs such as Banaras, Chanderi, and Maheshwar with GI certification, the brand is among the earliest in the industry to ensure regional authenticity and support for artisan communities. This move reflects Taneira’s ongoing commitment to ethical sourcing and connecting customers with the stories, skills, and heritage behind every weave.

Taneira is actively collaborating with artisan clusters and partner vendors to facilitate GI tagging, assisting with certification processes, documentation, and legal guidance. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to protect age-old weaving traditions amid rising industrialisation and diminishing recognition of traditional craftsmanship. The brand’s certified collections already include marks like the Handloom Mark, Silk Mark, and Khadi Certificate. With the inclusion of GI tags, Taneira further strengthens its assurance of origin and quality.

Speaking on this initiative, Ambuj Narayan, CEO of Taneira, said, “Marking National Handloom Day, we are proud to introduce GI-tagged sarees that celebrate India’s diverse cultural and textile history. This initiative not only highlights the legacy behind each weave but also builds a transparent supply chain that honours artisans and allows customers to make conscious choices. We strive to offer not just sarees, but heirloom-quality pieces that carry meaning, heritage, and craftsmanship.”

Taneira plans to expand its portfolio of GI-tagged sarees by incorporating weaves from nearly 10 additional regions, bringing more local crafts to the forefront. The brand continues to promote the value of handmade sarees that are not only timeless in design but also breathable, long-lasting, and environmentally considerate—serving as a tangible link to India’s cultural map.

Taneira, the women’s ethnic wear arm of Titan (a Tata company), curates exclusive sarees, blouses, and ready-to-wear apparel made from pure and natural fabrics. Sourcing from over 100 weaving clusters across India, the brand blends tradition with contemporary design to serve the modern Indian woman. In addition to retail expansion across 80+ stores in 41 cities, Taneira is also driving initiatives like ‘Weavershala’ to modernize weaving facilities while safeguarding traditional techniques, currently operating 18 centres nationwide.
