SWITCH Mobility, a manufacturer of electric buses and light commercial vehicles under the Hinduja Group, has dispatched the initial batch of 10 electric buses to Mauritius. This delivery forms part of a 100-bus order under a Government-to-Government initiative, presented as a gesture of goodwill from India to Mauritius.
A formal ceremony marked the departure of the buses, attended by Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius; Osman Mahomed, Minister of Land Transport; and Anurag Srivastava, High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, among other senior representatives. This deployment is seen as a strategic step in strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting sustainable public transport.
The SWITCH EiV12 electric buses have been designed and built at the company’s facility in Chennai, India. The vehicles are tailored for urban transit, integrating design and engineering to support daily commuting needs. With a seating capacity of 45 passengers, the buses are intended to meet global benchmarks in safety, reliability, and energy efficiency. The vehicles were procured through an open tender process led by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) and will be operated by the National Transport Corporation (NTC) of Mauritius.
RG Venkataraman, Chief Commercial Officer at SWITCH Mobility, commented on the development, saying the initiative supports both nations’ shared goal of promoting sustainable urban transportation. He highlighted that the buses bring together technology and local manufacturing, contributing to a cleaner transport system for Mauritius.
The EiV12 model is designed for short- to mid-range routes in cities and includes features aimed at improving ride comfort, operational efficiency, and safety. The buses are equipped with a dual charging interface for faster recharging and efficient use of depot space. A fire detection and suppression system has been integrated, and battery placement has been optimized for better stability. Real-time vehicle monitoring and fleet management are enabled through SWITCH’s proprietary telematics system.
These buses have been adapted to meet the specific operational needs of Mauritius, with a focus on durability, performance, and environmental impact. This deployment marks an important step in SWITCH Mobility’s international operations, reinforcing its role in the global electric vehicle supply chain.
