Svante Technologies Inc, has completed the commissioning of the world’s first gigafactory dedicated to the large-scale production of carbon capture and removal filters. Located in Burnaby, British Columbia, the 141,000-square-foot Redwood manufacturing facility marks a significant advancement in the global effort to combat industrial CO₂ emissions.
The Redwood facility is engineered to produce enough structured solid sorbent filters to capture up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ annually—comparable to the yearly emissions from more than 27 million vehicles. Svante’s patented filters, coated with advanced metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are designed for both post-combustion capture and direct air capture applications, offering scalable and cost-effective solutions to industrial emitters.
“This facility represents a critical leap in carbon capture infrastructure,” said Claude Letourneau, President and CEO of Svante. “By creating the foundation for high-volume filter production, we are accelerating the path to industrial decarbonization and creating a market for physical CO₂.”
Redwood’s commissioning follows a US$145 million investment supported by major strategic stakeholders such as Chevron New Energies, United Airlines Ventures, Temasek, GE Vernova, Samsung, and the Canada Growth Fund. Svante’s filters are currently deployed in high-concentration CO₂ sectors like ethanol, pulp and paper, and waste-to-energy, where carbon removal credits can be efficiently generated.
Svante also works with partners in harder-to-abate industries such as cement and steel, aiming to support broader decarbonization across the industrial spectrum. Projects already underway include installations with Chevron in California and Lafarge Holcim in British Columbia, as well as direct air capture systems with Climeworks.
The company anticipates building more gigafactories like Redwood in the coming years to meet rising global demand for carbon management solutions. With its advanced filter technology and fully operational gigafactory, Svante is establishing a manufacturing standard for engineered carbon removal systems while anchoring critical climate technology supply chains in North America.
Svante, based in Vancouver, Canada, designs and manufactures nanoengineered filters and carbon capture systems that remove CO₂ from industrial emissions and the atmosphere. Recognized by TIME, Statista, Cleantech Group, and Corporate Knights, Svante ranks among the top climate technology innovators globally.
