Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited (Sun Pharma) has established the Sun Professorship in Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, supported by a $2.5 million endowment. Mark G Lebwohl, MD, an internationally recognised dermatologist and researcher, will serve as the inaugural professor.
The professorship has been established within the Kimberly and Eric J Waldman Department of Dermatology. It will support academic leadership, research and training in dermatology, with the aim of advancing scientific knowledge, improving patient care and preparing future leaders in the field.
The initiative reflects Sun Pharma’s continued investment in dermatology research, education and partnerships. The company is the second-largest pharmaceutical dermatology company in the United States by prescription volume and has a strong presence in treatments for skin conditions.
The endowment will provide long-term funding for academic leadership in dermatology. Through research and training opportunities, the programme aims to help translate scientific discoveries into improved treatments and strengthen the development of future clinicians and investigators.
Dr Lebwohl serves as Dean for Clinical Therapeutics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Kimberly and Eric J Waldman Department of Dermatology. He is widely recognised for his contributions to psoriasis research and the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lebwohl has contributed to the development of clinical standards that have improved the management of skin conditions. He has also mentored physicians and researchers and supported advances in dermatology. He previously served as Chairman Emeritus of the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation and as President of the American Academy of Dermatology from 2015 to 2016.
Ahmad Naim, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, North America, Sun Pharma, said, “At Sun Pharma, we believe meaningful progress in dermatology care requires supporting the people and institutions advancing the field today and in the future. The establishment of this professorship reflects our long-term commitment to fostering the academic leadership needed to pursue new ideas and strengthen care for generations to come.”
Emma Guttman, MD, Ph.D., Waldman Professor and System Chair of the dermatology department at Mount Sinai, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to scientific research, academic leadership and better outcomes for patients with serious skin diseases.
Eric J Nestler, , Ph.D., Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Chief Scientific Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, said the professorship recognises Dr Lebwohl’s contributions to research, clinical care and the development of future dermatologists. Dr Lebwohl said the professorship would create opportunities to pursue important research questions, support promising investigators and translate scientific progress into better patient care.
