STMicroelectronics Launches Compact 3D LiDAR Module

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has introduced the VL53L9, a compact direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) 3D LiDAR module designed to deliver high-resolution depth sensing for edge artificial intelligence applications. The new module expands the company’s FlightSense portfolio by combining advanced sensing capabilities, on-chip processing, and AI-ready output in a single compact package, enabling faster deployment of intelligent systems across multiple industries.

The VL53L9 is the first direct Time-of-Flight all-in-one module from STMicroelectronics and features a resolution of 2,304 sensing zones, a wide field of view, frame rates of up to 100 frames per second, and an operating range extending from five centimetres to nine metres. Designed for low-power microcontroller-based systems, the module reduces system complexity while providing accurate three-dimensional spatial awareness for compact edge AI devices. The company said the new sensor addresses the growing demand for advanced depth perception in sectors such as robotics, industrial automation, smart infrastructure, healthcare, augmented reality, virtual reality, and intelligent consumer electronics.

Alexandre Balmefrezol, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Imaging Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, said the VL53L9 represents a significant advancement in Time-of-Flight sensing technology by combining high-resolution imaging, high-speed performance, and integrated processing within a compact architecture. He added that the module simplifies product development and allows customers to build sophisticated sensing applications while reducing hardware complexity and computational requirements.

The sensor has been developed to support a broad range of industrial and commercial applications. In robotics, it enables precise obstacle detection, object recognition, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and autonomous navigation. Industrial users can deploy the technology for accurate volume measurement in storage tanks, bins, and material handling systems, helping improve inventory management and operational efficiency.

For smart homes and commercial buildings, the module supports reliable human presence detection, occupancy monitoring, and people counting while maintaining user privacy. In augmented and virtual reality devices, it enhances gesture recognition, body tracking, and hand movement detection to create more immersive user experiences. Healthcare applications include patient monitoring, fall detection, and elderly care solutions that require accurate, real-time spatial awareness.

Industry analysts expect demand for high-resolution Time-of-Flight technology to continue rising as manufacturers increasingly integrate advanced 3D sensing into autonomous systems, smart devices, and industrial equipment. The growing adoption of edge AI is also driving demand for compact sensors capable of delivering accurate depth information without relying on high-performance processors.

STMicroelectronics serves more than 200,000 customers worldwide and operates across the global semiconductor value chain. The company continues to invest in technologies supporting intelligent mobility, industrial automation, energy efficiency, and connected devices, while advancing its sustainability goals, including achieving carbon neutrality across key operations and sourcing 100% renewable electricity by the end of 2027.
