STMicroelectronics Enhances Sensor Evaluation with Upgraded STEVAL-MKI109D Sensor Board

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has unveiled an upgraded version of its STEVAL-MKI109D sensor evaluation board, designed to speed up and streamline the process of developing context-aware applications using MEMS sensors. The new board, now featuring an STM32H5 microcontroller, USB-C connectivity, and additional digital interfaces like I3C, offers more flexibility and power for handling complex projects.

The STEVAL-MKI109D was introduced during a live tech demonstration, showcasing its simplicity in quickly connecting sensor modules to a PC for instant data analysis using ST MEMS Studio. This graphical development environment allows users to easily visualize sensor outputs, adjust settings, configure features, and leverage the AI capabilities of ST’s sensors equipped with machine-learning cores (MLC) and intelligent sensor processing units (ISPU). It also includes advanced functions like power monitoring and supply voltage management to enhance energy efficiency and simplify debugging.

ST’s MEMS sensor range includes inertial, pressure, and biosensors, as well as digital and analog microphones, offering various performance specifications suited for applications in industrial, consumer, and automotive sectors. These sensors are compact, durable, and ideal for use in smartphones, wearables, smart-home devices, healthcare equipment, environmental monitoring, and automotive technologies such as driver assistance and navigation systems.

To further support development, evaluation modules for each sensor type are available, mounted on a convenient DIL24 card with headers, making it easy to connect to the STEVAL-MKI109D board. Additional accessories, such as biosensor electrodes and remote-sensing extension cables, are also available for fast evaluation during prototype development.

At the core of the upgraded evaluation board is the STM32H5 MCU, which integrates a powerful Arm® Cortex®-M33 core. This setup provides the necessary peripherals for fast and efficient development. With access to over 1400 microcontrollers and microprocessors in the STM32 family, developers can easily find the ideal platform for their sensor projects. The embedded MLC, finite-state machine (FSM), and ISPU in select MEMS devices optimize performance and power usage, enhancing functionality and extending battery life.
