STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductors, and Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd., a subsidiary of Qualcomm, have entered a strategic partnership to develop next-generation industrial and consumer IoT solutions enhanced by edge AI.
This collaboration will combine Qualcomm’s advanced AI-driven wireless connectivity solutions, starting with a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread combo system-on-chip (SoC), with STMicroelectronics’ market-leading STM32 microcontroller (MCU) ecosystem.
The partnership aims to offer seamless connectivity integration and software tools for developers, facilitating faster adoption through ST’s global sales and distribution channels. The first product offerings from this collaboration are expected in early 2025.
Remi El-Ouazzane, President of Microcontrollers, Digital ICs, and RF Products Group at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the importance of wireless connectivity for edge AI applications and outlined plans to expand ST’s portfolio with Qualcomm’s connectivity technologies. Qualcomm’s General Manager Rahul Patel highlighted the combined strengths of both companies in driving innovation in the IoT space, bringing advanced capabilities to developers and end-users.
ST plans to introduce modules utilizing Qualcomm’s SoC, which will be compatible with any STM32 microcontroller. This partnership sets the stage for future innovations, including cellular connectivity for industrial IoT.
According to industry expert Andrew Zignani, this collaboration will accelerate the development of high-performance IoT solutions as global demand for connected devices continues to rise. The first products from this partnership will be available to OEMs in Q1 2025, with wider availability expected later.
