STMicroelectronics, a global leader in semiconductors, has joined forces with HighTec EDV-Systeme GmbH to advance automotive functional safety with a comprehensive solution aimed at improving the safety and affordability of software-defined vehicles. The collaboration integrates HighTec’s Rust compiler, certified to ISO 26262 ASIL D, with ST’s Stellar 28nm microcontrollers, which are also ISO 26262 ASIL D-certified. Rust is gaining popularity in the automotive sector due to its superior safety and reliability features, making it a key player in developing safety-critical automotive systems.
“Software-defined technologies are revolutionizing vehicle design by replacing traditional electronic control units with programmable systems,” said Davide Santo, Automotive Microcontroller Business Unit Director at STMicroelectronics. “This collaboration with HighTec ensures that automakers can utilize Rust while adhering to the highest safety standards in the industry.”
HighTec’s CTO, Mario Cupelli, added, “We’ve developed the first Rust compiler qualified for the automotive safety standard ISO 26262 ASIL D. Paired with ST’s Stellar microcontrollers, we offer a complete, seamless solution for customers, ensuring safety across compiler, hardware, and software.”
This partnership provides a powerful, safety-compliant toolchain for automotive software development, reducing time-to-market while maintaining strict safety and compliance. By integrating the ASIL D-qualified Rust compiler with ST’s Stellar MCU family, this solution enables faster development of safety-critical systems, supporting the increasing demand for software-defined vehicles.
Rust’s safety, performance, and reliability make it an ideal choice for automotive mission-critical systems. HighTec’s compiler enables seamless integration with legacy C/C++ code, providing a robust platform for developing safe and secure automotive applications. ST’s Stellar automotive microcontrollers are built on Arm® Cortex®-R52+ cores and have achieved ISO 26262 ASIL D certification. These microcontrollers offer exceptional performance and scalability, suitable for next-generation automotive systems, electrification, and safety-critical applications.
