Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced plans to lay off up to 2,450 workers at its Warren Truck Assembly Plant near Detroit. The layoffs come as the automaker ends production of the Ram 1500 Classic truck.

The layoffs, set to begin as early as October 8, will coincide with the plant’s transition from two shifts to a single-shift operation in general assembly. Production of the Jeep Wagoneer at the same facility will also continue on one shift.

As the Ram 1500 Classic’s production winds down, Stellantis will shift its focus to the Ram 1500 Tradesman, which is manufactured at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. The new 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman offers enhanced features and advanced electrical architecture designed to improve tracking and safety systems for commercial fleets, according to a company spokesperson.

The Warren Truck Assembly Plant employs approximately 3,700 workers, all represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. Those affected by the layoffs will receive 52 weeks of supplemental unemployment benefits and transition assistance, along with two years of healthcare coverage, as confirmed by Stellantis.

These layoffs follow a new labor agreement between Stellantis and the UAW, reached last fall after a historic six-week strike. Last week, Stellantis also announced a new round of voluntary buyouts for its U.S. salaried employees, part of a broader effort by CEO Carlos Tavares to cut costs in the company’s American operations.

During the company’s Investor Day in June, Tavares pointed to issues at two of its U.S. plants but did not specify which ones. Stellantis is a global automotive giant formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA Group. Headquartered in the Netherlands, Stellantis is one of the world’s largest automakers, with a diverse portfolio of brands, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel.

The company is focused on driving the future of mobility by investing heavily in electric vehicles, autonomous driving technologies, and sustainable manufacturing practices. Stellantis aims to lead the industry in innovation while maintaining a strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact, positioning itself as a key player in the global transition to greener transportation solutions.
