Steel Minister Launches Air Separation Unit at SAIL Bokaro Steel Plant

Union Steel Minister H D Kumaraswamy has officially launched an air separation unit (ASU) at the Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The ASU, built with an investment of Rs 750 crore, was developed by INOX Air Products (INOXAP), which described the project as its largest ASU installation.

The new facility has the capacity to produce 2,150 tonnes per day (TPD) of industrial gases, including 2,000 TPD of gaseous oxygen, 150 TPD of liquid oxygen, 1,200 TPD of gaseous nitrogen, and 100 TPD of argon. The inauguration was attended by Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel, Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, and SAIL Chairman, Shri Prakash Amarendu, alongside Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOX Air Products.

Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOXAP, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting the growing gas demands of the steel industry, stating, “We will continue to invest and support the sector’s gas requirements.”

This marks INOXAP’s second ASU project with SAIL. INOXAP’s long-term onsite gas supply collaboration with SAIL began in 2008 with the establishment of its first cryogenic Air Separation Unit (ASU) on a BOO basis at the Bokaro Steel Plant. This was followed by the commissioning of another ASU at SAIL’s Salem Plant in 2011, with a capacity of 108 TPD.
