Space Scientists Win Golden Vector Award 2024

Golden Vector Award

In a celebration of groundbreaking achievements in technological innovation, the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences at the University of Lisbon in Portugal has been honored with the prestigious Golden Vector Award 2024 for their remarkable contribution to space exploration with the MOONS spectrograph.

Every two years, igus recognizes the most exceptional energy chain applications worldwide, and this year’s award ceremony witnessed fierce competition with 328 entries from 37 countries. Alongside the University of Lisbon, TDK RF Solutions, MECAoctet, and Bear Machines GmbH were also acknowledged for their pioneering work in various fields.

The Golden Vector Award was bestowed upon the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences for their revolutionary MOONS spectrograph, a multi-object and near-infrared spectrograph developed in collaboration with the MOONS Consortium. This innovative instrument boasts a field of view equivalent to the size of the moon and has the capability to simultaneously observe over 1,000 objects in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range.

One of the significant challenges in developing the MOONS spectrograph was ensuring the safe guidance of sensitive optical fibers during movement. To address this challenge, engineers utilized energy chains made of high-performance plastic from the triflex series by igus. These energy chains guarantee that the fibers remain stress-free, even in demanding conditions, thus safeguarding the integrity of scientific observations.

Meanwhile, TDK RF Solutions was awarded the Silver Vector for their innovative test rig for driver assistance systems, and MECAoctet received the Bronze Vector for their movable nightclub ceiling, demonstrating the diverse applications of energy chain technology across industries.

Additionally, Bear Machines GmbH was honored with the Green Vector for their commitment to sustainability with the development of the Bear-Cut machine, which recuts tyres on cars and trucks, promoting fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The Vector Award, now in its ninth edition, celebrates outstanding achievements in cable guidance technology and innovation. With a record-breaking 328 entries from 37 countries, the competition highlights the global impact of energy chain applications in driving progress and technological advancement across various sectors.
