Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS) has revealed the LYT-828, a powerful new CMOS image sensor designed for smartphones. Boasting a 50-megapixel resolution, the LYT-828 is part of Sony’s LYTIA series and delivers industry-leading dynamic range performance exceeding 100 dB. This means it can accurately capture scenes with both bright highlights and deep shadows, even when zooming.
Built on the foundation of the earlier LYT-818, the LYT-828 continues to serve both main and sub-camera modules but introduces a new innovation: Hybrid Frame-HDR (HF-HDR). This advanced technology fuses multiple HDR strategies—merging single-frame HDR with dual conversion gain (DCG) and multi-frame HDR techniques. The result is enhanced image depth, reduced highlight clipping, and minimized shadow loss, offering visuals that closely align with what the human eye perceives.
HF-HDR stands out for its ability to maintain consistent performance across a variety of conditions—including while zooming. It does so by integrating Loss-Less Exposure (LLE), a method that refines exposure control for optimized light capture and improved signal-to-noise ratio. This ensures that detailed and vibrant images can be achieved across different lighting situations, even when zooming in on a subject.
Sony has also incorporated Ultra-High Conversion Gain (UHCG) circuitry into the LYT-828, which significantly reduces random noise. This allows for clearer images with finer color gradations, especially in low-light conditions, minimizing the graininess that often plagues night or indoor photography.
Conventional HDR systems can cause smartphones to overheat or drain battery quickly during extended use. The LYT-828 counters this with a low-power design, allowing for uninterrupted HDR performance during both preview and recording. Users benefit from a reliable preview experience that accurately reflects the final captured content—something particularly valuable for real-time composition and video shooting.
