Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) has officially opened its Centre of Excellence in Polyurethane Technology (CoE-PUTech), developed in partnership with the Indian Polyurethane Association (IPUA). This initiative is a major step forward in bridging academic knowledge and industrial application in polymer science.
The centre’s launch follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between SVU and IPUA in April 2023. A key highlight of this collaboration is the introduction of a Post-Graduate Diploma in Polyurethane Technology (PGD-PU Tech.), a programme designed to integrate classroom instruction with real-world industry experience.
The centre was inaugurated in the presence of notable figures, including Harneet Kochar, Chairman of IPUA; Prof VN Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of SVU; Prof Ajay Kapoor, Vice-Chancellor Designate; Dr Satish Modh, Pro Vice-Chancellor; Prof S Sivaram, Professor of Eminence, and other deans, directors, and faculty members. Industry leaders from Dow Chemicals, BASF-India, and postgraduate students from the polymer science department also participated in the event.
CoE-PUTech offers students and working professionals an opportunity to develop specialised skills in areas such as polyurethane formulation, product design, material analysis, and sustainable manufacturing practices. The programme features a hybrid structure with both online theory modules and on-site lab sessions at the state-of-the-art PU-PPAD Laboratory.
The laboratory is equipped with advanced tools including hot air ovens, airflow testers, pycnometers, dumbbell presses, ball resilience testers, Bennewart flex testers, abrasion and compression set testers, and foam cutting machines—allowing for comprehensive hands-on training in polyurethane applications and testing. The centre’s research focus includes product innovation, recycling technologies, sustainability, and end-of-life solutions for polyurethane products, positioning it as a knowledge hub for forward-looking industrial practices.
Prof VN Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of SVU, stated, “Our aim is to provide learning that translates directly into practical capabilities. This new diploma strengthens our commitment to technical education that is aligned with industry needs, especially in the fast-evolving field of polymer and material sciences.”
Harneet Kochar, Chairman of IPUA, added, “This initiative is a result of purposeful collaboration. By combining academic depth with industry insight, we are shaping a platform that encourages innovation, skill-building, and sustainable growth in polyurethane technology.”
