ABB has strengthened its partnership with Södra Cell, Sweden’s leading pulp manufacturer, by securing an order to implement advanced process control (APC) at the Mörrum mill. This latest order is part of an ongoing collaboration to improve efficiency, digitalization, and operational performance across Södra Cell’s facilities.

Previously, ABB’s solutions were successfully implemented in the bleaching and digesting processes at Södra Cell’s Mönsterås and Värö mills. For the Mörrum mill, ABB will enhance the existing ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system (DCS) with APC technology, focusing on improving the bleaching process of one of the mill’s production lines. The goal is to replicate the improved process stability and reduced resource usage achieved in other locations.

Marie Boman, Project Manager at Södra Cell, expressed enthusiasm about leveraging lessons learned from previous projects and working with ABB’s control system experts to ensure another successful implementation. The partnership aims to reduce chemical consumption, improve process consistency, and optimize bleaching performance. The implementation will include process analysis, model development, control system integration, training, and the final handover. The project is expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
