SMPP Limited, a prominent Indian manufacturer of soldier protection gear, has secured two major contracts from the Indian Army, valued at over ₹300 crore, under the Emergency Procurement Policy 5. These orders include the supply of 27,700 bulletproof jackets and 11,700 advanced ballistic helmets designed to meet the evolving protection needs of Indian soldiers.

The bulletproof jackets are equipped with advanced load distribution systems and quick-release mechanisms, ensuring enhanced mobility and safety during combat. The ballistic helmets, a breakthrough in India’s defense technology, are the first to be designed to withstand hardened steel-core rounds fired from an AK-47 rifle, setting a new standard in personal protection for soldiers.

Dr  Shiv Chand Kansal, Chairman and Managing Director of SMPP, expressed his pride in the company’s achievement, stating that this order reinforces their commitment to the motto “protect those who protect us.” Ashish Kansal, Director and CEO of SMPP, also emphasized the company’s strong market leadership, noting that SMPP commands over 90% of the domestic personal protection gear market. He further highlighted the company’s dedication to innovation, having filed 17 patents, with 10 already granted, ensuring their technology evolves to meet the demands of modern warfare.

SMPP has been a key player in the defense sector since 2008, when it began manufacturing ballistic-grade boron carbide plates at its facility in Palwal, Haryana. The company’s expertise has continued to grow, having delivered over 186,000 Level III and III+ bulletproof jackets ahead of schedule in 2018. SMPP also provides specialized ballistic helmets for Sikh regiments and shields tested to withstand armor-piercing rounds.

This latest contract aligns with India’s Make in India initiative, bolstering local manufacturing capabilities in defense and advancing the country’s self-reliance in protective gear for its armed forces. SMPP Limited (formerly SMPP Private Limited), founded in 1985 and headquartered in New Delhi, is a premier Indian defence equipment manufacturer specializing in personal protection, platform armour, ceramic armour, and ammunition systems.

The company is a market leader in the production of combustible cartridge cases for tank and artillery calibres and has extensive expertise in boron carbide ceramic plates—widely used in lightweight, multi-hit ballistic armour for vehicles, aircraft, and body protection. Its product line also features bullet-resistant jackets, helmets, shields, and platform kits designed for military, police, and paramilitary personnel.

Over 90% of SMPP’s revenue is derived from government contracts, and it has actively exported safety solutions to more than 23 countries across Europe and Asia since 2008. Certified under ISO 9001:2015, AS 9120, and NIJ-compliant standards, SMPP has earned accolades for its innovation—ranging from indigenization and technology awards to recognition for early delivery of bulletproof jackets. With a lean team of around 150 employees and an annual revenue in the realm of ₹536 crore (FY24), SMPP is actively expanding its capabilities through new ammunition facilities and broader product R&D aimed at boosting India’s defence self-reliance
