Skoda Auto has reached a significant milestone, producing its one-millionth high-voltage battery system at its MladáBoleslav plant. Since 2019, the facility has been manufacturing batteries, starting with plug-in hybrid systems for the Superb iV. Today, it focuses exclusively on larger battery systems for fully electric vehicles built on the MEB platform.
The plant operates two assembly lines with a combined daily capacity of 1,500 units. These battery systems, offering capacities from 55 to 91 kWh (net 52 to 86 kWh), are installed in Skoda models like the Enyaq and Elroq, as well as electric vehicles from Volkswagen, SEAT/CUPRA, and Audi.
Andreas Dick, Skoda Auto Board Member for Production and Logistics, highlighted the significance of this achievement, “Producing one million battery systems reflects our team’s dedication and collaboration across Volkswagen Group brands. It also underscores our commitment to sustainable mobility and the industry’s transition to greener technologies. Construction of an additional battery facility in MladáBoleslav is already underway to meet future demand.”
Skoda’s production facilities, expanded in 2023 with a second assembly line, span 10,500 square meters and involve 90 employees per shift alongside 82 fully automated robots. The production cycle delivers one battery every 60 seconds, with each weighing around 490 kg.
The modular design of the batteries supports various configurations, incorporating 8 to 13 modules with 16 to 26 cells, tailored for capacities ranging from 55 to 91 kWh. In June 2023, Skoda unveiled a cutting-edge tomographic center to enhance quality control. This facility uses computed tomography (CT) technology to inspect internal battery components with unparalleled precision, detecting irregularities without dismantling the systems.
To support its shift to electromobility, Skoda has invested heavily in workforce training, upskilling over 28,000 employees. The company is also focusing on digitizing operations and modernizing its processes to align with the demands of sustainable automotive production.
Skoda’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it as a key player in Volkswagen Group’s transition toward a greener automotive future.
