Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has demonstrated its dedication to the government’s ‘Skill India’ initiative through its Student Car Project. This year, Mechatronics students have successfully designed a distinctive pickup truck by merging elements from the Volkswagen Taigun SUV and the Volkswagen Virtus sedan.
The project unfolded over nine months, encompassing various stages such as concept finalization, idea generation, market analysis, research and development, procurement, assembly, and rigorous vehicle testing. Students employed advanced manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing, to produce different components, while also adding features like underbody protection, studded tires, ambient lighting, and roof-mounted lights to enhance the pickup’s design.
Throughout the project, professionals from SAVWIPL provided mentorship, facilitating collaboration with suppliers and industry experts to turn students’ ideas into reality. This initiative is part of SAVWIPL’s broader efforts to support the government’s emphasis on youth skill development, as highlighted in the Union Budget 2024.
The SAVWIPL Academy’s Dual Vocational Training program in mechatronics, established in 2011, has played a significant role in upskilling high school students. This 3.5-year course is modeled after Germany’s vocational training system, aiming to prepare young individuals for careers in the automotive industry. It promotes technological creativity, confidence, and a problem-solving approach, providing students with insights into industry trends and Volkswagen Group standards.
On a global scale, Škoda operates the Azubi Student Car Project through the Škoda Academy to showcase the training quality at its Vocational School while supporting India’s ‘Skill India’ initiative. This project enables students to gain practical experience in assessing and implementing ideas, deepening their understanding of theoretical concepts and enhancing their manufacturing skills.
Andreas Dick, Member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics at Škoda Auto a.s., stated that the completion of the Student Car Project 2.0 in India illustrates how young talent can leverage advanced technology, precision, and efficiency in vehicle development. He emphasized the goal of integrating global manufacturing practices in India to foster an environment for young innovators, thereby reinforcing India’s position as a global manufacturing hub.
Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited, noted that the Student Car Project serves as a valuable platform for Mechatronics students to bring concepts like the pickup truck to life. He remarked that this initiative supports the country’s ‘Skill India’ mission by promoting hands-on learning and empowering local talent within a global framework. Arora further stated that such initiatives are essential for advancing national development goals and reaffirmed SAVWIPL’s commitment to societal progress, local community support, and youth empowerment.
