Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has taken a major step in its environmental efforts by planting over 700,000 trees across Maharashtra. This initiative is part of the company’s broader ecological restoration strategy, which includes tree planting, mangrove rehabilitation, and the adoption of renewable energy at its manufacturing plants.
A highlight of SAVWIPL’s green agenda was the planting of the 100,000th tree at its Green Future Park, located near the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar car manufacturing facility. The park aims to enrich the oxygen levels in the Shendra Industrial area and help restore local ecosystems.
SAVWIPL is also working to reduce its carbon footprint significantly. Its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant is now fully decarbonized and operates entirely on green energy. Meanwhile, the Chakan facility features 18.5 MWp of rooftop solar panels, which offset nearly 30% of the site’s CO2 emissions.
Beyond tree planting, the company has restored 100 hectares of degraded mangrove forests in Alibaug by planting over 580,000 mangrove trees, playing a key role in rejuvenating the coastal ecosystem. Additionally, SAVWIPL has implemented rainwater harvesting projects with a combined storage capacity of more than 600 million liters in areas of Maharashtra prone to drought.
A spokesperson from SAVWIPL emphasized, “These initiatives will significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions once the trees mature in 5-7 years. In addition to cutting emissions, they also help cool local temperatures, restore ecosystems, and increase green cover.”
SAVWIPL’s environmental efforts extend beyond its primary projects, with additional initiatives around its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune facilities. These include planting 25,000 trees at Oxygen Park and 11,500 at the Green Hub. The Green Future Park, with 63,500 newly planted trees, further strengthens these efforts.
These initiatives reflect SAVWIPL’s commitment to long-term environmental impact, in line with the Group’s ‘goTOzero’ mission, which focuses on reducing environmental harm through sustainable practices.
