SINGER India Ltd has unveiled plans to start manufacturing Auto Zig Zag sewing machines within the country, following a newly signed licensing agreement with SINGER Sourcing Limited LLC (“SVP Worldwide”). The agreement grants SINGER India the authority to manufacture and source select categories of these machines specifically for Indian consumers.
With a 175-year global heritage and more than 155 years in India, the SINGER® brand continues to strengthen its commitment to India’s growing manufacturing ecosystem and innovation landscape. This move aligns with national priorities under the Government of India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India” programmes, both aimed at advancing domestic production, encouraging technological development, boosting employment, and building skilled talent for the future.
Rakesh Khanna, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of SINGER India Limited, said “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Government of India, the Bureau of Indian Standards, and DPIIT for their continued support in India’s journey toward becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. Their emphasis on quality and industry development has enabled companies like ours to take this major step forward.”
The licensing arrangement will allow SINGER India to produce advanced Auto Zig Zag models tailored to local consumer expectations while working toward cost competitiveness on par with global production. The agreement also opens the door for SINGER India to export these machines to SVP Worldwide in the future. All products will comply with mandatory BIS certification, reflecting a strong commitment to safety and quality standards set by the Government of India.
Under the agreement, SINGER India will take on the production, outsourcing, and distribution of selected SINGER Zig Zag sewing machine models for the domestic market, marketed under both the SINGER and MERRITT™ brands. This move is aimed at strengthening the company’s product presence and meeting growing demand across India.
The arrangement also grants SINGER India the opportunity to supply these machines to SVP Worldwide for global distribution in the future. This provision highlights India’s rising importance as a manufacturing hub and positions the company to play a larger role in international supply chains. Initial production will begin at SINGER India’s Jammu facility, with plans already underway to set up a modern, dedicated manufacturing unit over the next 6 to 12 months.
To support this expansion, SINGER India has also entered into an investment arrangement with VSM Group AB, an affiliated company of SVP Worldwide. Through this agreement, VSM Group AB will acquire more than 5 lakh equity shares of SINGER India via preferential allotment. This investment reflects SVP Worldwide’s long-term vision for India and will assist in building new product lines and establishing the upcoming manufacturing plant.
Headquartered in Nashville, SVP Worldwide is the largest consumer sewing machine company globally, holding nearly one-third of the market. Its three renowned brands—SINGER®, HUSQVARNA® VIKING®, and PFAFF®—have shaped the industry with their engineering expertise and continuous innovation. Trusted across generations, SVP Worldwide remains the preferred partner for professionals and hobbyists alike.
SINGER’s 175-year history includes over a century and a half of serving Indian households. Since entering India in 1870 with its first branch in Mumbai, the company has consistently set benchmarks in reliability, technology, and product excellence. In 1977, it was incorporated as Indian Sewing Machine Company Limited to take over the operations of the original Indian branch. Today, SINGER India continues to uphold its legacy as a leading name in sewing solutions.
