Singapore’s APRIL Group, a prominent player in the global fiber, pulp, and paper industry, has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Origami, a leading consumer tissue products company based in India. In a media release on Wednesday, APRIL Group revealed its strategic move into the rapidly expanding market for tissue and personal hygiene products in India.
Origami, established in 1995, operates tissue paper mills and converting plants across India, producing a diverse range of products including facial tissues, paper napkins, tissue rolls, kitchen towels, hand towels, and wet wipes under the Origami and associated brands. Despite the acquisition, Origami’s founders will retain a significant minority stake in the company and will continue to lead its operations.
“The Indian tissue market is witnessing rapid expansion, fueled by evolving consumer perceptions and habits regarding hygiene and personal care,” remarked Suneel Kulkarni, Country Head of APRIL India & Subcontinent. “By joining forces with Origami, we are well-positioned to meet the growing national demand for high-quality, sustainable personal hygiene products.”
APRIL Group’s acquisition of Origami reflects its strategic objective to expand globally into densely populated markets, following recent investments in the tissue markets of China, Southeast Asia, and Brazil. With a track record as a top exporter of pulp and paper products to India for the past 25 years, APRIL Group sees immense potential in the Indian tissue market and aims to leverage Origami’s expertise to capitalize on this opportunity.
The acquisition aligns with APRIL Group’s commitment to incorporating top local businesses into its global expansion strategy, providing resources to enhance technology and processes for delivering high-quality, environmentally friendly products at competitive prices. Moreover, APRIL’s investment in Origami facilitates the “Make in India” initiative, promoting foreign direct investment in local production and contributing to India’s economic growth.
As APRIL Group strengthens its foothold in the Indian tissue market through the acquisition of Origami, the collaboration is poised to drive innovation, sustainability, and accessibility in the personal hygiene products segment. With a shared commitment to excellence, APRIL Group and Origami are set to shape the future of the Indian tissue industry, catering to the evolving needs and preferences of consumers nationwide.
