Simplex Castings announced it has been chosen to lead a consortium for a government-backed initiative to develop a green hydrogen-powered direct reduced iron (DRI) pilot plant. The pilot project, with a production capacity of 40 tons per day (TPD), will involve key partners such as BSBK Pvt Ltd, Ten Eighty Investment, and IIT Bhilai, who will contribute their expertise to ensure the project’s success.
With an estimated capital expenditure of Rs 230 crore, the project will receive significant government support, covering approximately 70% of the total cost, amounting to Rs 161 crore. The government had invited proposals for three initiatives, including the development of a hydrogen-based DRI production system using a vertical shaft, along with projects focusing on hydrogen use in blast furnaces to reduce coal and coke consumption, and the injection of hydrogen in vertical shaft DRI units.
Simplex Castings stated that it will lead the consortium to build this pioneering green hydrogen-powered DRI plant, advancing sustainable iron production. Simplex Castings Limited is a leading manufacturer and supplier of high-quality castings, primarily for the steel and automotive industries.
