Electric scooter manufacturer Simple Energy, which is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO), announced on Tuesday that it has begun commercial production of the country’s first rare earth-free motors at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu. This development reinforces the company’s vision of “Built in India, for the World” and paves the way for more sustainable and geopolitically secure supply chains, according to a company statement.
“Recent disruptions in global supply chains and growing material dependencies have made one thing evident: the future of electric mobility must be rooted in self-reliance. Deep localization and a ‘Make in India’ strategy are no longer just goals—they are necessities,” said Suhas Rajkumar, Co-founder and CEO of Simple Energy.
The newly developed motors offer the same level of performance and torque as conventional systems but eliminate reliance on heavy rare earth materials, the company stated. “This patented, proprietary technology replaces heavy rare earth magnets with specially optimized compounds. It is powered by advanced algorithms that control heat and torque delivery in real time. Already in production, this innovation proves that high performance can be achieved without sacrificing sustainability or strategic autonomy,” Mr Rajkumar added.
In April, China, a dominant supplier of rare earth minerals, restricted the supply of these critical resources, significantly affecting India’s automobile sector. In response to these challenges, Simple Energy explored alternative material solutions, rigorously testing various compound combinations to match the performance of systems based on rare earth magnets. These advancements, paired with proprietary algorithms that manage heat, magnetic fields, and torque, ensure efficient and dependable motor operation without the need for geopolitically sensitive materials.
Simple Energy is a pioneering electric vehicle manufacturer committed to innovation and sustainability.
