Siemens Mobility has announced its first order for Vectron locomotives integrated with a battery module, enabling operations over short distances without the need for overhead power lines. This eco-friendly feature is particularly useful for covering the “last mile” and performing shunting tasks. The locomotives are equipped with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery and an intelligent battery management system for optimal charging and discharging.
The development of this battery module was supported by the federal “Future of Rail Freight Transport” program, which aims to accelerate innovations in rail transport. The order, placed by eMyn AG, a subsidiary of Widmer Rail Services AG, includes two Vectron locomotives and was financed through a structured solution provided by Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft. The locomotives are expected to be delivered by 2027.
Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, expressed, “We’re excited to expand our Vectron fleet with Widmer Rail Services AG, and with the new battery module, our customers can now operate fully electrically and reduce CO2 emissions.”
Pierre Widmer, CEO of Widmer Rail Services AG, commented on the advantages of the battery-powered locomotives, stating that they would allow for more efficient shunting operations, saving costs and enhancing operational processes. Peter von Flüe from Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft added, “We are pleased to support the sustainable future of rail transport and to aid in the growth of JeMyn AG and Widmer Rail Services AG.”
The Vectron’s modular design provides full operational flexibility, even in areas without overhead lines, eliminating the need for additional shunting locomotives and benefiting both the environment and operators economically. This marks a significant step in Siemens Mobility’s commitment to sustainable rail transport.
To date, over 2,600 Vectron locomotives have been sold to 103 customers across 16 countries, achieving more than one billion kilometers in operational mileage. The Vectron fleet has received approvals in 20 European countries, proving its efficiency and reliability in daily operations.
