Siemens Mobility has been awarded a contract by RATP to deliver the new Train Operation Automation System for Paris Metro Line 13. The decision follows Île-de-France Mobilités’ 2022 approval to automate the line, one of the busiest in the network. The project will deploy Siemens Mobility’s CBTC GoA4 technology, enabling driverless operations that will boost capacity, improve service reliability, and optimize energy efficiency.

The agreement covers installation of the automation system, creation of a new operations control center, and equipping 66 trains, with an option for long-term maintenance of up to 30 years. Implementation will be phased, beginning with new rolling stock in 2027 and progressing to full automation by 2032. Siemens Mobility has already delivered driverless solutions on Paris Metro Lines 1, 4, and 14, and will apply this expertise to Line 13’s modernization.

“Being selected for this project reflects RATP’s trust in our capabilities. Line 13 will benefit from advanced automation that enhances performance, supports decarbonization, and improves passenger comfort,” said Marc Ludwig, CEO of Siemens Mobility Rail Infrastructure. He added that the project builds on Siemens Mobility’s proven record in Paris, including the world-first upgrade of Line 14’s driverless system while extending automation to new segments, allowing the line to serve up to one million passengers per day.

The modernization effort involves upgrading the existing GoA2 system—where drivers currently manage doors and safety while trains run semi-automatically—to a fully automated GoA4 setup. Alongside train upgrades, the project will include renovation of the Operations Control Center, staff training, and real-time passenger information systems. These enhancements will allow shorter train intervals, adaptive scheduling to match passenger demand, and improved energy efficiency.

Spanning 24 kilometers with 32 stations, Line 13 links Châtillon-Montrouge in the southwest to Saint-Denis-Université and Les Courtilles in the north. It serves major interchanges including Saint-Lazare and Montparnasse-Bienvenüe, carrying more than 550,000 passengers daily. The northern section, where the line splits into two branches, experiences the heaviest traffic, underscoring the need for this upgrade.

Siemens Mobility, a separately managed company of Siemens AG, has been advancing intelligent transport solutions for over 175 years. Its portfolio includes rolling stock, rail automation, electrification, turnkey systems, and digital solutions that enhance passenger experience and ensure lifecycle value. In fiscal 2024, Siemens Mobility reported revenue of €11.4 billion and employed around 41,900 people worldwide.
