Siemens Mobility, alongside its Parklife Metro consortium partners, has revealed a detailed model of the metro train carriage for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. This mock-up marks a significant step in the development of the project and provides a first look at the future passenger experience once the cutting-edge metro system begins operating in Greater Western Sydney.
Léon Soulier, CEO of Siemens Mobility’s Turnkey Business Unit, expressed excitement over the project, stating, “This new line, stretching 23 kilometers from St. Mary’s to the new airport and Bradfield City Center, will support 14,000 jobs during construction and drive growth for New South Wales and the national economy.”
The mock-up offers a preview of the train interiors, designed for a comfortable travel experience with large windows for scenic views of Western Sydney. The trains will feature flexible seating arrangements, ample handrails for stability, and spacious areas for wheelchair accessibility. The wide double doors ensure efficient boarding and disembarking for passengers.
This high-fidelity, life-sized mock-up serves as a detailed representation of the train’s design, helping engineers and stakeholders evaluate elements like interior lighting, emergency systems, and passenger information displays. The model provides an opportunity for thorough testing and allows for valuable feedback before the final train production begins.
The mock-up also reveals the unique seat upholstery design, which incorporates artwork inspired by the Cumberland Plain, where the metro line will operate. The patterns feature representations of the local landscape, with symbols like Ngurra (country) and Badu (water), while the priority seats highlight scenes of waterholes and wattle flowers.
Siemens Mobility was awarded the contract for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project in 2022, marking Australia’s first turnkey rail project and a public-private partnership. The project aims to construct a 23-kilometer metro line linking the Western Sydney International Airport with the Bradfield City Center. Siemens Mobility will deliver 12 fully automated, driverless trains and modern digital rail infrastructure, including signaling, electrification, telecoms, platform screen doors, and a depot. Additionally, Siemens will implement Railigent X, a digital service suite, to improve operational reliability and asset management. The maintenance of the system will be managed by Siemens Mobility for 15 years.
As part of the Parklife Metro consortium, Siemens Mobility’s portion of the project is valued at 900 million euros. The company is a global leader in intelligent transport solutions and continues to innovate with a range of digital products to enhance the passenger experience and infrastructure performance. In fiscal year 2024, Siemens Mobility reported revenue of €11.4 billion, employing approximately 41,900 people worldwide.
