Siemens is expanding its data centre infrastructure portfolio through a strategic investment and exclusive partnership with Skeleton Technologies, a developer and manufacturer of high-power energy storage systems specialising in supercapacitors. The partnership will add Skeleton’s supercapacitor technology to Siemens’ electrical infrastructure offering for data centres. The companies aim to address rapid fluctuations in electricity demand caused by artificial intelligence workloads and support the deployment of higher-density computing systems.

AI data centres can experience sharp changes in power consumption as large numbers of processors operate simultaneously. These fluctuations can occur within milliseconds and reach megawatt scale within seconds, creating challenges for electrical infrastructure, equipment reliability and grid stability.

Skeleton’s supercapacitors are designed to absorb and release energy rapidly, helping manage short-term power fluctuations. The technology can act as a buffer between computing equipment and the electricity supply, reducing disturbances and supporting more stable operations.

The companies intend to offer the combined solution to hyperscale data centre operators and developers of AI factories. It is designed for installation in existing alternating-current (AC) architectures and retrofit projects, potentially allowing operators to increase computing capacity without undertaking a complete facility redesign. The solution is also intended to provide a route towards future 800-volt direct-current (DC) systems.

Peter Koerte, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG and President of Smart Infrastructure, said power availability had become a major constraint on expanding AI infrastructure. He said the investment would combine Siemens’ electrical infrastructure expertise with Skeleton’s supercapacitor technology to help customers improve resilience and deploy additional computing capacity.

Taavi Madiberk, CEO and co-founder of Skeleton Technologies, said the partnership would combine the company’s technology with Siemens’ industrial reach to support AI infrastructure development and improve energy efficiency. He said Skeleton intended to expand its role in power systems for AI data centres.

Markus Grabmeier, President of Electrical Products at Siemens AG, said Skeleton’s portfolio complemented Siemens’ existing data centre solutions. He added that the companies planned to develop systems for next-generation data centres, supported by manufacturing operations across Europe and the United States.

Siemens has worked with Skeleton Technologies as a technology partner since 2022 and became an investor in 2023. The new partnership builds on that relationship as demand for AI computing infrastructure increases. Siemens provides infrastructure solutions for data centres, from utility connections to equipment within computing facilities. The company said the investment would strengthen its position in the AI infrastructure market.

Siemens is a technology company operating across industry, infrastructure, mobility and healthcare-related businesses. Its Smart Infrastructure business provides electrical and building technologies for applications including data centres. Skeleton Technologies develops and manufactures high-power energy storage systems, including supercapacitors designed for applications requiring rapid power delivery and management.
