Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) along with ATMA and ITTAC concluded their tri virtual series on October 29. Eminent speakers along with industry experts shared their knowledge and experience about tyre safety and sustainability
“New tyre norms are being evolved and will be in force, it will be a big step towards road safety and improving fuel efficiency”, Gaurav Gupta, Deputy Secretary, MoRTH said on Friday. The tri-virtual series was aimed at imparting knowledge and spread awareness about tyre safety, technology and upcoming regulations for the automobile industry. “Tyre is also a highly regulated product. It’s our mission that no accidents occurs due to lack of maintenance and awareness.
"About 30 lakh deaths occur due to poor safety norms in the world annually and India accounts for 11 per cent of these fatalities”, Mr. Gupta added.
Mr.Gupta said “The Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways is working on bringing down the fatalities and deaths by 50 percent by 2030. Tyres play an important role in safety of the vehicle. When we think of safety of a car, we mostly think of seat belts and airbags, while there's another important part we often overlook that is the tyre. Tyre manufacturers should focus on manufacturing safe, reliable and compliant product”.

Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA)
“Our collective vision as Indian Manufacturing Industry is to increase the use of sustainable materials in tyre manufacturing through research and development in materials, processes and new technology. The industry is working to enhance the performance and reduce carbon emissions to ultimately lower the carbon footprint. Ultimately a fine balance need to be maintained between comfort, performance and safety”, said Anshuman Singhania, Chairman, ATMA.
“The 16, 17 and 18 inch tyre industry has grown substancially in the recent years due to increase in the demand for passenger vehicles”, said V.K.Misra, Technical Director, JK Tyre.
The session also highlighted about Tyre and Road Wear Particles (TRWP). TRWP are a major source of microplastics that are harmful to humans. These particles if inhaled, can cause adverse effects such as DNA change and inflammatory effects. The industry is working hard to reduce the particulate emissions in the environment.
Tyre is the most overlooked aspect when it is directly related to automobile safety. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) took an excellent initiative of spreading awareness regarding tyre safety through this Tri Virtual series.
'"We must play our PART, where P stands for Pressure : Maintain correct air pressure recommended by the car manufacturer. A stands for Alignment-Make sure the wheel alignment is as recommended by the car manufacturer. R stands for Rotation-Rotation of tyres in the pattern and frequency recommended by the car manufacturer is important. T stands for Tread-Always ensure that the tread is not worn out.
